Democracy is a system created to avoid absolute power; a system created in response to the opressive government the people of America were initally trying to escape in England. The system is not flawless, however-- at times it seems as if a certain amount of increased power is unavoidable under certain circumstances, even in a system of government such as democracy, but not so much where it can lead to despotism. Democracy is a system which selects leaders based off what the majority desires. And it is not merely one leader, the president, but the Congress and Senate, national and state governments. Everyone in the country cannot be pleased. Everyone has different opinions and morals, making it impossible for the leaders elected to be ones who will make everyone falling under the power of their decisions satisfied. The point of the elected is to make decisions that are in the best interest of the majority. In a demoractic system of government where certain guidelines must be followed (such as a limited term one can be in office), despotism is an inapplicable idea.
I agree with you completely. I like how you mention that the system is not flawless because that is true and power does tend to concentrate into the hands of one person depending on the situation at hand. Good Job Anya!
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are many more branches of the government keeping one another in check, but wouldn't you agree that the president has the majority of the power in the end and if they desire to could choose to do whatever they wanted even if it wasn't in everyone else's best interest?
