"Democracy leads to Despotism"

“Democracy leads to Despotism”, a controversial quote from Plato. Democracy, being a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and is exercised by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system, is the exact opposite of Despotism, which is absolute power or complete control. The general thought of Democracy is freedom and fairness. Everybody loves the feeling that all power does not revolve around one other single person. Despotism like a Dictatorship is seen as something completely negative, when all power is held my one single person, nothing can possibly go right. To say that Democracy not sometimes but always leads to Despotism is very controversial. I would have to disagree with Plato’s statement. There is no way when power is concentrated on such a broad area, that it could uncontrollably lead to a dictatorship against the will of all people holding some sort of power, which in a democracy is everyone. Of course there is no realistic way to get the opinion from every single person in a democracy, which is why there are multiple people elected by majorities to deliver the most common opinion or decision. Maybe if those elected by majorities were willing to give up their government rank/power in order to achieve despot for one person, this quote would be valid, although it is possible in the most corrupt democracy of corrupt democracies. Very unlikely, although still possible, it would be rare for a democracy to turn to a dictatorship, and it is simply outlandish to say that Democracy always leads to Despotism.

I agree with Plato's statement now that I look at it from your perspective

  2. I agree with Ben. I think that is its extremely unrealistic for all opinions and thoughts of the public to be organized under one leader. Democracy is very beneficial for the people but it has to be looked at in a way that helps the people and doesn't back track on its foundation and definition.

  3. I agree with your statements. I found, that we had very similar ideas about Plato's quote. I found it interesting how you included the slight possibility of a democracy being taken over by despotism
