Plato once said "democracy leads to despotism", this statement is completely false in my perspective. First of all despotism is when a nation has a single ruler and that individual abuses their power in ways that are undemocratic. Plato must not know what synonyms are because Dictionary.com's definition for despotism is, "the exercise of absolute power, esp. in a cruel and oppressive way". Undemocratic is a synonym for oppressive. So if that's true how can he say "democracy leads to despotism"? If any form of government was going to lead to despotism it would be communism. In China you can see how there is truly a single ruler where as the United States has several branches that help/advise our leader lead the nation. Also the United States isn't even a true democracy because we have something called the electoral vote, but if we elected presidents off of just the popular votes then we would be a true democracy.
Nice post Lili. Interesting comparison between the Chinese and U.S. governments. The part where you confronted Plato on possibly not knowing what synonyms are made me laugh.
