Democracy leads to despotism

According to Pluto, “Democracy leads to despotism”. Upon reviewing this statement, with the basic knowledge I have on democracy and despotism, I would disagree. As despotism is described as the exercise of absolute power I believe that the use of a government in which the people vote for what they want, prevents tyranny in a country. Why I believe this is because hypothetically speaking it is possible for a country to convert to absolute power via democracy, but only if the entire nation agrees as to one rulers morals and values. The chance of the entire nation agreeing on various controversial subjects is way out of the realm of possibilities. The reason that this is such a small possibility is because our population is made up of people from different places receiving different types of education. In return this alters’ the way that individuals think and decide as to what they believe is best for their country. This is why I would disagree with Pluto.

  1. I can see the point, however is it really keeping any one person from being in overall power simply by holding elections? In my opinion that person still has the option to do whatever he/she wants once elected into an office.
