"Democracy leads to despotism"

Pluto once claimed that "democracy leads to despotism". This is a statement that I strongly disagree with. The definition of despotism is when absolute power or control is exercised similarly to that of a tyranny. With the knowledge of both a democracy and despotism it would be next to impossible for democracy to lead to despotism due to the way a democratic government is set up. A democracy is set up with three main branches which include congress, executive and senate. Within these three main branches there are various ways for each branch to check in with one another in order to keep an even amount of authority within each branch. Not to mention that if anything within the government where to be changed depending on what the change was, both the citizens and the three branches would have some sort of input. However, nothing is passed or changed with the consent of one individual and with that said this is why it would make it next to impossible for democracy to lead to despotism.

  1. I politely agree to disagree with your blog because although despotism is indeed a controlling individual, I believe a controlling individual is mainly elected by a democracy, people making free choices. It's ironic because when these free choices are made, they could include voting for a strong leader, which could become a despot.
