"Democracy Leads to Despotism"
I disagree with the statement Plato made arguing, "Democracy Leads to Despotism" for numerous reasons. As a country, we all vote to make vital decisions within our government, as described in a 'democracy'. Although the country will always have a main leader, we can be sure that extreme measures have already been set to prevent despotism in our democratic government. Three branches of government are established so that the president doesn't have complete political power. Therefore, a tyranny is impossible already under this one condition. Next, the president, under the constitution, is not allowed to make decisions until the issue has been voted for by the people. In times of crisis, however, the president is allowed to do what is best for the country. If the people believe that the president failed to do what was best for the country, or has gone against the laws of the constitution, the people have the power to have the president impeached. This way, despotism can't possible exist. Another regulation that exists says that the president can only hold office for four years maximum. It would be hard, under the strict laws of the constitution, for a tyrant to sieze power regardless of the time granted to him. Since four years is the maximum, a leader is unlikely to become a tyrant because of the time restraint added to the standard pressures the constitution. For these reasons, Democracy does not, and never will, under the current regulations, lead to Despotism.
