It is no secret that Palestine is planning on applying to be recognized as a state on the global scale.
What needs to happen:
15 members must vote on issue
All must agree whether to further review Palestine's case or to dismiss it
United States already plans on vetoing their proposal
In theory this closes the door on Palestine...but in practice we left a very large window open.
Palestine has already established that they have a plan B.
Palestinians could turn to the larger General Assembly, which is dominated by pro-Palestinian developing nations, for admission as a "nonmember state." Approval is guaranteed, but the victory would be largely symbolic, though the Palestinians could gain admission to certain U.N. bodies, including the International Criminal Court, that they could potentially use as a launching pad for action against Israel.
It is with this potential danger that once again the United States has once again designed a underhanded solution. (twisting arms)
As follows:
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a new bill to Congress with 57 co-sponsors which proposes slashing America’s financial contribution to any part of the UN that supports the vote on the recognition of Palestine on September 20.
Currently the United States accounts for 22% of the financial support to the UN which makes us the largest contributer. The bill calls for the US being able to select where their money is being spent which would allow them to limit much of the needed relief in many war torn nations.
The US also helps fund 25% of their peace-keeping missions.
With the US cutting off financial support, the money that funded the UN relief to Palestinian refugees would be completely ended.
Based on this bill it sounds as though the United States is attempting to twist arms of those who support Palestine becoming a state, or even an 'observer state'.
