US and the Israeli Palestinian Conflict

The United States has been facing the difficult decision of either staying on the side of their strong ally or to go with what the majority of the world prefers. If they vote regarding Palestinian Statehood made it past the unanimous Security Council vote then Palestine would without a doubt become a state. The US has been consistently vetoing the idea; however the pressure now is certainly far greater. I believe that Palestine should be a state and have the same rights as the Vatican in the United Nations, yet I am more on the side of the US in this case (which rarely happens). In order for Palestine to become a state I truly think that there should be peace negotiations set in stone as to what is going to happen when this issue is resolved. But after reading "The Week" today my opinion was swayed a tad, the article that was on page 4 stated that even if this notion was passed Palestine would still be less equipped and less strong than Israel. The way I see this though, is that if the notion is passed then Israel will still continue to take advantage of Palestine, therefore I still side with the United States' decision to vote no until a solid peace negotiation has been made and agreed upon.
