"Democracy Passes to Despotism"

Despotism is defined as a form of government in which there is one individual or group that rules with absolute power. The respected Greek philosopher known as Plato argued that “Democracy passes to despotism.” This is an argument that is correct to a certain extent. Democracy has its many flaws which can lead to the opportunity for despotism to occur. The many checks and balances of our democracy deter any opportunity for one person or group to rule with absolute power, but due to the many flaws of a democracy, groups with majority can have ruling power to a certain degree. These despots in the government will have the absolute power of the majority and will make decisions and actions that favor themselves. To say that democracy leads into a form of government in which an individual or group completely controls every aspect of the government and the various actions and decisions of the government would be false. A takeover or revolution of some sort would be needed for such a thing to occur. In conclusion, democracy does present the opportunity for despotism due to the nature of democracy and the power of the majority, but this will vary amongst the different structures of governments in nations who are a democracy.

  1. bill those groups you speak of is my way of saying the leading powers in a democracy, i must agree with what you said and also add that those majorities can become corrupt and lead to a more single powered leadership role.

  2. Nice post Bilsta. I can second your feedback and say that a democracy must be very finely tuned for it to be considered stable and properly functioning.
