The United States is in an extremely difficult position regarding Palestine’s claim for UN membership. At this point in time, there will be downsides to each of the following options; however, it is in the United States’ best interest to not accept Palestine into the UN. Although Obama is definitely declining Palestinian entrance in the UN out of self-interest, there are many legitimate reasons for his choice that make me believe that the U.S. should decline Palestine’s claim for membership as well. First of all, the United State’s has and always should support Israel as one of their biggest allies. Many Americans feel a strong attachment to Israel, and if America was to accept Palestine as a state, America would lose many supporters of it’s own country, making the U.S. lose a lot of nationalism. A country will not be strong if their people aren’t devoted and loyal to their own nation, making it extremely important that the U.S. stays strong as nation. Another important aspect is that Israel has a strong military, and that will only benefit the U.S. as a strong ally of Israel. If Palestine was to become a state, and the U.S. lost a strong relationship with Israel, there could be potential dangerous situations because many of the Palestinian leaders are terrorists, and the U.S. wouldn’t have another strong military power to protect themselves with. Overall, it would be more beneficial to the U.S. and even the protection of other areas of the world to not admit Palestine into the UN.
