The truth is, I don’t know. And here’s why:
The United States has the most powerful, uncontested military that the world has seen. It has a responsibility as the worlds only surviving superpower to use it’s influence for the betterment of the world, not itself. However it needs to maintain its political and economic stance as a wealthy, profitable nation. This question of The United States’ responsibility to the world vs. to itself is best exemplified by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. More specifically it is presented by the ultimatum that Obama has been faced with.
The Jewish people deserve their own nation. They were placed there by the UN and have fought for their right to be there. If the UN vote passes, there will ultimately be war and Israel could face annihilation.
Obama believes in an independent, recognized Palestinian state. However America’s economy and wealth are greatly tied in with the success of Israel as a nation. In many ways, Obama’s hands are tied and he must use the US’s position in the Security Council to veto the vote and put a stop to the liberation of Palestine. While this is an unfortunate situation, many believe America’s interests in Israel must come first.
In support of Palestine:
On the other hand, the majority of the world believes in Palestine’s recognition in the UN. They have been unjustly treated by Israeli troops and deserve their own nation. The US’s obligation, as a super power, to the protection of human rights and liberties should not be compromised due to financial gain. Obama should be moral in his decision to create Palestine as a nation. It is unjust to use US power obtained 60 years ago (Security Council) to stop a vote that the entire UN wants.
The truth is, I don’t know. Israel means a lot to me and while I support the protection of human rights, I couldn’t bare to make a choice that would result in it's potential destruction.
