Palestine wants just four things: statehood, reclamation of “their” land, destruction of Israel, and the returning of their refugees and families to their homeland. Israel wants to maintain a Jewish state, keep their post-1982 land, and keep Palestinian refugees out of their land. Despite the refugee discrepancy, all of these can be accomplished easily. If Israel keeps their borders but removes their troops from Palestine, Palestine will feel more liberated. By gaining statehood, all Palestine really gets is a title and defined borders, neither of which is bad. Palestinians will feel less threatened by Israel and therefore likely feel less of a need to attack Israel. If Israelis attack, Palestine can bring them to the International Criminal Court. This potential consequence would cause for less violence, since neither country wants to be brought in front of the ICC. If America approves the Palestinian state, its relationship with the Middle East will skyrocket. The United States should approve the Palestinian state with Israel’s borders and assurance that the Jewish state will live and maintain these borders: neither larger nor smaller. In this manner, both sides will be appeased and, hopefully, some violence can be stopped. Though Barack Obama will not be re-elected if he does approve a Palestinian state, he should be more concerned with the world and a potential peace over his career.

What should the US do about the Palestinian state?
